July 04 HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!July 03 A little catch upLike this kitty, wrap yourself up in the flag and relax! Monday-Tuesday - caught up on doing necessary things after the project; includes writing 6, count 'em six, thank you notes to staff helpers. (Usually I procrastinate; so for me this was a big deal. Wednesday's big news was that I lay down for what I thought would be a 10 minute nap and woke up an hour later! Very refreshed, though. Guess I needed it since I've been sleeping poorly the past couple of weeks. Thursday - went shopping and noticed the heat (90 degrees) because of comparing with the night time run a week ago. I should shop earlier. BTW, bought some potato salad for Saturday's holiday meal; hope it's the kind I like. Thursday evening - made pork chops with apples and homemade dressing. Yummy. Worth it! Friday 2:00 a. m. - no, I didn't go shopping; I turned on the computer to go online (something I never do at that hour). But Comcast was having problems and I couldn't get on. Oh, well. Enjoy your day before the Fourth!
July 01 First day of July 2009Take a hint from these two and RELAX - IT'S SUMMERTIME! July looks quiet ahead but I see one little activity on the horizon that is a tad bothersome. I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, you remember my nice neighbors who have brought me Sunday dinner from time to time? Well, I invited them today to share some Omaha steak tenderloin tips on July Fourth. Gloria positively glowed at the invitation. We didn't make a big deal out of it. She didn't volunteer to bring anything. So, I imagine I'll just take the tips over to them when they're done. But we'll see. I'm up for anything. Have an enjoyable Wednesday!
June 30 Last day of June 2009This year June was known for finding cherries every week at the grocery store. Hmmm. And yum. Also for finishing up my project. Also for rain! It just never seemed to stop! Going to Walgreen's at 3:00 a.m. Did I tell you about that? I couldn't sleep; so decided to visit the 24-hour Walgreen's Bought a few things. Wonderful not to have the sun beating down on the car. LOL No traffic and practically no one in the store. Back in bed within the hour -- then I slept just fine! Altogether June was pleasant.
June 29 Project resultsI ran as fast I could to meet the deadline and --- I made it! Everyone seemed happy with the results, even me, though I find I'm never quite sure about that. Thanks for hanging in there with me, everyone. You Spacers are a great group of cheerleaders.
June 16 Sit tight for a few days, pleasePerhaps you remember about the first day of the month I mentioned a work project that was due in June. Its deadline is coming up in a week or so. Consequently, I need to give it my full (or most of) my attention. I'll get back to blogging in a few days. I may occasionally take time to visit you and leave the occasional comment. If anything unusual or exciting happens between now and then, of course I'll let you know.
June 14 Afraid of food? Are we afraid of food? Afraid that anything we eat might add pounds or bring on illness?
I've blogged recently about eating French toast for breakfast and some comments indicate how it would make them fat.
Folks - It's only two slices of bread! I don't make and eat a stack of six or seven slices. Two slices is the same as a sandwich. And the syrup? I imagine it's about the same as a couple of slices of salami or bacon re sugar and fat.
I used to spend much of my waking hours worrying about eating the wrong food. However, years ago my mother said that when she reached her sixties, she just ate normally and pretty much stayed the same weight. It seemed impossible and I envied her.
But I'm finding that for me, it's working that way too. I try to eat moderatly. This means only 2 scoops of ice cream, not five; only a couple of cookies, not ten; half of a baked potato for dinner, not a whole one. Also, I've been enjoying fruit more than I ever used to. It just seems so delicious now; whereaas, just a few years ago, nearly all fruit tasted sour.
So, lighten up, folks. In general, food is supposed to help, not hurt us. (I know there are some exceptions; but the normal side of eating should be pleasant and happy, not something to be dreaded.)
June 13 Breakfast, office Depot and PublixOkay, given my sweet tooth, it's not surprising that I enjoyed another breakfast of French toast. But this morning it was French raisin bread toast. Yummy. I thought of sprinkling coconut over the regular kind; but as I opened the freezer door to retrieve the gummy white bread, I saw the raisin bread. I was sold!
After lunch - 3 boring leftover-from-last-night's-dinner of McDonald's chicken fingers - I shopped at Office Depot. I took the coupon that gave me $10.00 off if I spent $50.00. Amazingly, I ended spending over $100.00 and got the $20.00 discount. Oh, well. The real culprits were the packages of printer ink for my Brother printer. This is why the printers themselves are so cheap. They get you on the ink.
Next was a trip to Publix because I needed cherries. They're now $2.89, a full $1.10 cent cheaper than a couple of weeks ago! Of course bought lots more than the cherries.
Came home exhausted. Put everything away (after a sit-down and a glass of soda).
I think dinner tonight will be one of those little pizzas. Oh, well.
June 12 Today - FridayAt eight o'clock this morning it was already 80 degrees!
I needed to go to the bank this morning. I've tried doing something online but finally was told that the bank needs an in-person signature from me in order to make it happen. It's such a nuisance for me! I dreaded the trip. But everything went smoothly after all, for which I'm very grateful.
Nearly every day, my lunch dessert is a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Okay, a scoop and a half.
Now that the bank errand is successfully completed, I feel more peaceful and I expect I'll sleep better tonight.
So far, the day is progressing nicely.
I wish you all a happy weekend.
June 11 A helpful thought on safetyPsalm 121
1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. June 10 Wednesday HighlightsFirst thing: Okay maybe third or fourth thing after getting out of bed, reading the paper, enjoying orange juice: FRENCH TOAST. Making the best of those huge pieces of gummy bread. Real maple syrup (Yes, it's expensive; but it's only me. If I had a bigger family, it might be different.)
Second thing: grilled cheese that turned out PERFECTLY.
Third thing: pedicure followed by a supremely delicious Bear Claw from Panera's. Oh my, it's ambrosia. Bought two so that I'll have one for tomorrow.
Fourth thing: will be my neighbor's homemade vegetable beef soup. Had some yesterday also and it was delicious. Made Bisquick biscuits for it - in the microwave no less. Cut the recipe in 1/2 and had three biscuits about 2" wide and nearly 1" high. Microwaved them on high for 2 minutes 15 seconds. Two minutes only would be better. I'll remember the next time. Any way, I'll have another one with the soup tonight.
Also, still enjoying the cherries. I noticed that starting tomorrow their price will be just $3.29. Will buy more next week.
My gosh - is this post all about meals and eating? LOL Guess that's what's on my mind. Don't know why. Well, except that I like to eat and I like to cook and I like to eat . . .
June 09 Tuesday catch up* On Sunday, old fashioned that I am, I try not to go shopping. However this week was an exception. * First I had to exchange my Norton software for the one called Internet Security (also Norton). I was under a deadline of when the protection would run out. Now I'm up to date and feeling safe again. * Next I went to Publix. I tried to go there on Saturday but a fierce thunderstorm came up before I arrived. The wind was so strong that I almost was blown over. It seemed the better part of wisdom to postpone. But I was out of cherries! So picked them up on Sunday after church. The price was reduced from 3.99 to 3.49. It makes them even more delicious. Of course I picked up several other things - one can never just buy one thing, can we? * Also uploaded some photos to the photo contest. (previous blog gives details). * On Monday the cleaning people were supposed to come; but at the last minute they changed it to today. This suited me fine since I wanted to watch a live streaming on the Internet and would have missed it if they had kept to their schedule. * Today I started some laundry and am getting ready for a good, productive day. * Happy Tuesday to each of you!
June 08 Photo contest for gardenersSince so many of you are photographers PLUS you have pretty gardens, I thought you might like to check out this gardening photo contest. This is the first month and that means there aren't too many entries so far. Last time I looked (yesterday evening) only 84 photos had been uploaded. So, even WE might have an opportunity to win a prize (a gardening book). It started last month, so there's only a couple weeks left for new entries. http://features.csmonitor.com/gardening/2009/05/19/share-your-garden-photos-you-could-win-a-prize/ Hope you'll give it a try. After all, it's good, clean fun! LOL
June 05 photos of the dayTry this URL. It's got pictures ranging from darling (newborn baby hippo) to warm and fuzzy (2 St Bernard mountain dogs) to historic (Hilary Clinton in Cairo listening to Obama speech).
Enjoy!
June 04 Hints for writing blogsMaybe it's the school teacher in me. But could I suggest a few things that would make reading what you write a tad easier? * Use paragraphs. Even stream of consciousness uses a few openings now and then. The paragraphs make it so much easier to read. Just push "enter" on your keyboard. The result breaks up your writing. A paragraph usually indicates one thought or subject at a time. But even if you just put a space between your lines occasionally, it would help tremendously. * Adjust the font size so that it's "normal" or "large." Maybe it's my aging eyes; but having to squint and lean closer to the screen in order to read your blogs is hard for me. Often it causes me to just give up and go on to the next space. I love what your write and don't want to throw cold water on your enthusiasm. But these couple of suggestions will make it easier for me to read what you write.

I love clinics. This is the first time in my life that I have had the time and money to take lessons and attend clinics. I feel as if I have learned more in the past 3 years than in all the previous years of my riding career. It is so great seeing the improvement in Miss Minnie's responses to me also. I am really enjoying her and look forward to lots of fun rides and experiences on her.

Hi Nancy, Horses with white noses tend to sunburn and it can get pretty ugly looking when it cracks. Horse with white around their eyes tend cancer in that area for some reason. Miss Minnie has reddish hair around her eyes so I do not worry, but her nose can get badly burned.
